essay 3 : ‘Alternative Media VS Mainstream Media’.

Blog is one of the alternative media that uses internet connection. It is very popular especially to teenagers, and has even given a big impact toward all generation without question . With the creation of blogspot, myspace, facebook, twitter and many other blog website there is no doubt that people are turning into blog rather than spending time on the normal mainstream media such as television, radio, newspaper, and other media.

As in world wide web log: “as in captain on the ship” (Hewit 2005) The blog is literaturely been dominent of issue, more frankly people are tune in blog rather than frankly toward news.

Weblogs, according to Prezner and Farrel(2004) is a web page to no external editing, providing on-line commentary, periodically updated and presented in reverse chorological order with the hyperlink to other online resource. The other defination toward blog, Blood(2000) There are essentially 2 types of blog weblogs, first emphasis the diary and comment aspect to seek influence wider public opinion or to raise the profile of the blogger.Second is emphasize on hyperlink which means to act as a filter system. The writter of the blog is known as “Blogger”.

Blog was created in 1993 by Marc Anderson, when the internet was not widely known and people are not dependent on it as it is now happening nowadays. It was the time when people are depending on the mainstream media more as their source of information. The creation of Blog was been made on Mosai Browser website. The Mosai Browser was the first browser that has been created before later came Internet Explorer ,Nestcape , or Mozila Firefox that is famously been used world wide today.

The Genereal Election was the result of the domination of blog and internet as the Malaysian political and government suffer the Political Tsunami for the first time in 52 years as we see the Pakatan Rakyat which is the opposition party gainning 5 state in Malaysia as Selangor, Perak, Kedah, Penang was included in. This 5 state was the most bussiest people which people are using Blog and internet as their trusted information. The other is how the opposition uses these way to fight the ISA and also the fighting for demolishing The PSMI( Pelajaran Sains Dan Matematik Dalam Inggeris). They use these way to send their message and also the Confrontation rather than using Electronic medias and journalism to express their strategy and gaining the Malaysian to trust in them as they were been ruled out using other alternative as the government controlled everything.

According to Aniruddin Atan(2008) the advisor of National Pres Club, internet (blogs) were been neglected by most of the politicion but how ever it has been used as the most important tools for the opposition parties and NGOs to influence the public opinion. Despite the media blackout and bias againts them, the opposition employed another strategy which is the use of alternative media in the promotional campaign. In fact the cyberspace strategy was apparent way before the polling. The e-campaign optimized the internet of many form such as YouTube, Friendster, web blog, blog, website and e-mail aimming to reach voters at work, home elsewhere. The e-campaign made it easy for opposition to disseminate its ideology, manifesto and misssions to the targeted audience regardless of space and time.

As the New government has been establish with under a new Prime Minister which is Dato Seri Najib tun Razak, we are looking on how will the opposition battle for another ways to win the next General Election. Could it be the dawn of a new era for Malaysian to experience the Pakatan Rakyat rulling malaysia or it will be another 5 year for Barisan Nasional which is the current government to maintain their domination of party. But with the people are everybody knows how to use the internet even a 5years old can do it, maybe the blog could be dominating the again. The latest action which the the demolition PSMI which was started with alternative has reach their objective as it turn that PSMI is no logger being used is can be best referred to the Media Dependency Theory.

The existance of Blog brings a huge impact towards the society. People are more free the express their words and emotional and it will be a scenario which is Democracy as the Malaysia would want to.In the last General Election they were 17 anti-establishment blog but only 3 pro-establishment.
Malaysia boost one of the largest online communities in the world after the USA and Indonesia. It is estimated that there are 500,000 active blog in Malaysia which is been handled by different of party with different of party with different purpose. In fact, around the world itself there is 108 million weblog exist with 120,00 new blog everyday 24 hours. Alternative Media such as blog actively attempts to tell the truth rather than actively attempting to hid or misdirect the reader just as the main media would do today even after the lossing of the 5 state.

essay 2 : GLOBAL WARMING.

On 28th March evening, I went to Bukit Bintang to witness the celebration of earth hour. Since Parkson store in Sungei Wang had the Jualan Hebat we bought few additional T shirts and noticed the time was already 9 P.M. Most of the shopping complexes were brightly lighted up and the street lights were on as usual, but the lights of high rise buildings were switched off except few essential lights. The trip was not very impressive until I saw the TV clip which showed the darkness engulfing city stage by stage.

As the price of coal increased tremendously TNB should have been happy about it by shutting the generators to produce enough electricity for an hour. As the conservation of matter and energy states that matter and energy are neither created or destroyed and one form can be converted into another form only.

In chemistry O means oxygen which is nascent and very reactive, so oxygen exist as O2 the molecular form for the living things to breathe and make use of it and when three atoms of oxygen group together to form O3 it is called as ozone and found mainly in the ozone layer that surround the earth. The function of ozone is filtering the harmful ultra violet radiation from the sun.

What is the relationship between the hole in the ozone layer and global warming? CFC is the group of chlorofluorocarbons which are gaseous state emanate into the atmosphere from the reckless activities of human in the name of comfort and development has started to accumulate in the ozone layer. The size of this accumulation is getting bigger and bigger which let more harmful UV rays enter the atmosphere and the temperature of the earth increase by 4o so far.

How does switching off the light decrease the temperature of the earth?

Cleaning up the ozone layer is the imminent action scientific community should take in the near future. Sir Richard Branson the CEO has offered US 1 billion as an incentive to someone who come with the idea of clearing the hole which means removing the accumulated CFC. There is a very good opportunity for our scientists to get awarded if they find out some new methods.

In the mean time how can we help to avoid further increase in temperature? We have to give up our comfort. If we do not give up now we will be forced to give up sooner or later.

essay 1: Police And Ah Long

The Royal Malaysian Police have publicly told the Ah Long that there is no need for them to hide as the Police know their identities. Eventually they could be found and it is better the Ah Long surrender or rather, report to the nearest police station.

Question 1: If the Police knew who the Ah Long were, why did not they just arrest them or place them under restricted residence or take whatever action deem fit ? The Police could have acted earlier, afterall they know them [from the Police own mouths]!

Question 2: If any member of the public know who these people are, or that if they know ‘criminals’ or any suspicious 'figures' in the neighbourhood, it is a known fact that for not reporting such figures to police is in a way, committing an offence, and the police can charge the person or persons for failing to act.

Question 3: Who can the Police or Attorney General charge for not reporting the identities of ‘Ah Long’ or suspected criminals to THE POLICE?

Article 3 : Distraught Streamyx User Part ll

19-Mar-2009 ,Kuala Lumpur -It has been days since I posted the "love letter" and still my internet connection is devastating. Days gone by and every single day I am being charged and by the end of the month the bill will be in my post box demanding payment to be made. Failling to do so, I am in a risk of the service being barred. I wonder now if I care about that anymore…

I was being brought up with the notion that Malaysia is a peaceful country and therefore as one of Rakyat Malaysia, I am held responsible to sustain the harmonious environment. Therefore, the idea of calling out victims like me to create riots and pulling out banners with hatred words infront of TM offices is the last thing I have in mind. But what else should I do to make some people realize that petty problem for some are big problems to others? Or should I just terminate my account and just look for other vendor??!! Will that made things easier?? With the hassle of terminating account, filling out new application form, waiting for activation etc., I guess all that can really make my day!!

For those who have ideas that can help me to solve this "petty" issue, your suggestions will be deeply appreciated...

article 2 : PUBLIC HOLIDAY - Apply for leave on Oct 3

The Star,

2008/09/18-Kuala Lumpur

Some quarters requested that the government declare Nov 2 as a special public holiday but the government denied them the request, saying it was not practical as employees could always apply for leave if they did not want to work on that day.

History was repeated in 2006 when Deepavali was celebrated on Oct 21 (Saturday) and Hari Raya on Oct 24 (Tuesday), leaving Oct 23 as a working day. Once again, there were calls from various parties and non-governmental organisations requesting the government to consider declaring Oct 23 a public holiday. This time, the government decided in their favour. This year, Hari Raya will be celebrated on Oct 1 and 2 (Wednesday and Thursday) leaving a gap of one working day on Oct 3 (Friday).I foresee a likelihood of another round of requests from the people for the government to declare Oct 3 a public holiday. I hope these groups will not again pressure the government for a public holiday when they can apply for annual leave from their employers for that one day.

SUMMARY

The groups do not have to request from the government to declare the Friday, Oct 3 as a public holiday because they can apply for annual leave from their employers for that one day.

Article 1 : How to save the dignity of Bahasa Malaysia - quickly

I can relate to the unease of many who feel that Bahasa Malaysia appears to take a back seat in many cases in our beloved country, especially larger cities like KL. It is no secret that many non-Malays are not really fluent in the national language which can cause a lot of problems in understanding Malay culture and affairs, no thanks to our segregated education system. It's OK for Malays and Malaysians to learn more languages to get ahead in world affairs, but for Malays to have to converse with their non-Malay brethren is another matter.

It is no wonder Anwar Ibrahim and the Pakatan Rakyat is adamant in abolishing the teaching of Science and Maths in English which they deem as not only eroding the stature of BM on her own hinterland, but also corrupting the whole Malaysian education system, should they come to power anytime.

Instead of waiting for the fate of the controversial policy, let's sort out other ways to revive the dignity of Bahasa Malaysia, quickly. I hope the following ideas will materialise without much controversy, though they may require money:

1) Increase usage of BM in Malaysian web site. This should really apply to retail, corporate and services based websites. Many GLC websites are only available in English. Perhaps we are already used to searching info in English, yet Malaysians especially Malays will definitely be delighted to see their favourite sites speak their language. Kudos to Facebook and Friendster for that!

2) Non-Bahasa newspapers should dedicate a column to Bahasa just like the Star has Mind Our English. In this way non-native Malay speakers will have a better idea of how to speak Bahasa more fluently.

3) The Dewan Bahasa and Pustaka should strive to add new words, including urban slangs and new tech jargons, into Bahasa, actively and reasonably. Perhaps they can liaise with Pusat Bahasa in Indonesia to enrich the Nusantara language together.

Nowadays Malay youths used kitorang, korang and diorang are used in place of kami, kamu and mereka for "we" (exclusive), "you" and "they" respectively. I think it's reasonable to absorb these slang pronouns as they originate from existing Bahasa words. But ai and yu in place of saya and awak? Lu pikirlah sendiri.

4) Let's have a law to check on those who made insulting or derogatory remarks on BM. Or rather, each and every language on Earth, to be fair.

5) Do something to revive modern Malay literature, which I hear is in some kind of rut right now. Are all the lectures and seminars held by renowned Bahasa authors not enough? Translated works are fine as they can add more Bahasa books in bookstores and libraries, but let's go for originality.

Please do not see this as any way to undermine efforts to improve the Malaysians' standard of English. In fact, I believe people will only want to learn foreign tongues if they do not see it as a threat to the local lingo. Look at mainland Europe. Though publications, signages, eatery menus and TV shows in English are hard to come by in, say, Germany, yet many of their citizens are fluent in half a dozen languages, as long as they know how to take care of their bahasa, their jiwa bangsa.
