essay 2 : GLOBAL WARMING.

On 28th March evening, I went to Bukit Bintang to witness the celebration of earth hour. Since Parkson store in Sungei Wang had the Jualan Hebat we bought few additional T shirts and noticed the time was already 9 P.M. Most of the shopping complexes were brightly lighted up and the street lights were on as usual, but the lights of high rise buildings were switched off except few essential lights. The trip was not very impressive until I saw the TV clip which showed the darkness engulfing city stage by stage.

As the price of coal increased tremendously TNB should have been happy about it by shutting the generators to produce enough electricity for an hour. As the conservation of matter and energy states that matter and energy are neither created or destroyed and one form can be converted into another form only.

In chemistry O means oxygen which is nascent and very reactive, so oxygen exist as O2 the molecular form for the living things to breathe and make use of it and when three atoms of oxygen group together to form O3 it is called as ozone and found mainly in the ozone layer that surround the earth. The function of ozone is filtering the harmful ultra violet radiation from the sun.

What is the relationship between the hole in the ozone layer and global warming? CFC is the group of chlorofluorocarbons which are gaseous state emanate into the atmosphere from the reckless activities of human in the name of comfort and development has started to accumulate in the ozone layer. The size of this accumulation is getting bigger and bigger which let more harmful UV rays enter the atmosphere and the temperature of the earth increase by 4o so far.

How does switching off the light decrease the temperature of the earth?

Cleaning up the ozone layer is the imminent action scientific community should take in the near future. Sir Richard Branson the CEO has offered US 1 billion as an incentive to someone who come with the idea of clearing the hole which means removing the accumulated CFC. There is a very good opportunity for our scientists to get awarded if they find out some new methods.

In the mean time how can we help to avoid further increase in temperature? We have to give up our comfort. If we do not give up now we will be forced to give up sooner or later.

I appreciate your inquisitiveness that values more than two cents.
Electricity is generated by various methods in power plants. I assume that you know the function of turbine, dynamo and grid. When electricity is generated the supply must match consumption. The supply is controlled by various ways and one of the method is, switching of one or few of the generators in the power plants which may be coal operated, hydro electric ( hydro refers water)or nuclear plant.
Why do we have fuse at our home? When there is a surge the fuse will automatically cut off the supply to save our appliances and hard earned belongings. There is no question as excess electricity as the electrical engineers working in various parts of the power generation and supply process monitor the situation and control the supply to our needs.
When electricity is cut off 100% it is called as black out just like that happened in four states in 1990s
Our hospitals are built with facilities that equals or I can boldly say more than that of developed countries. If there is a power failure, the generators will automatically take over the function and the doctors can continue to do what they are doing.
darkblues... The only way to reduce global warming is to do what you hesitate to do in the name of COMFORT.

i totally agree with your last sentence...

unfortunately, we are not able to go back to where we started from...

a simple example, some of us cant live without TV, some of us cant survive without handphones, i may not survive without my beloved computer (i got to do something with this addiction!)

and most of us cant live without electricity... hot la, mosquito la... bla bla bla...

we cant even stay in caves now, or up the tree (although not literally, i think malaysian gave the perception to outsider that we are indeed staying on trees)

we use gas stoves to cook, not using dry branches to cook anymore...

there is no turning back as we have advanced so much from out ancestors. Hence, earth is taking its course maybe... turning back to square one?
